In graduate school, a seemingly normal Sydney Bristow was recruited to become a spy, and began to live a double life that seemed to come naturally to her. Tortured with the truth, Sydney began to work for the CIA, meeting and falling in love with fellow agent, handler and on again off again boyfriend Micheal Vaughn.

It was revealed that Sydney's mother and her mother's blood was not ordinary. Sydney's family and Sydney herself were part of a legacy penned by prophet Micheal Rambaldi, destined to bring out the end of the world or save it. Although she was tired of her mother's duplicity and her father's lies, Sydney began to seek out the truth behind the Derevkos and found Marina, her cousin, living incognito in West Hollywood. Starved for family she could trust, she and Marina became closer than sister, playing up pretenses of being lovers in order to keep Marina's identity a secret.

Sydney's friendship Marina drew her closer into Marina's circle, and into the life of Shane, an androgynous hairdresser. Friendship grew into attraction, and suddenly Sydney found herself in the middle of a genuine love triangle, battling feelings for a now married Vaughn and the loyal Shane.
